THE BIGGER PICTURE
The end to Xavi's Barcelona spell was something of a protracted affair, with the former Camp Nou midfielder announcing in January that he would be leaving at the end of this season, only to perform a U-turn and state that he would remain for another season. The club then announced he had been dismissed at the end of the campaign which saw the club finish second in La Liga, 10 points behind rivals Real Madrid.

Xavi's tenure in charge of the Catalans came with the club facing significant financial challenges, but he did steer them to Liga title glory in 2022-23, which he can add to the eight crowns that he won on the pitch. One of the club's most iconic players, he also collected three Copa del Reys and four Champions League titles during his career.

WHAT NEXT FOR XAVI?
The 44-year-old now plans to take a sabbatical, but it is clear he remains committed to pursuing a coaching career. Should he move to the Premier League, he will no doubt look to emulate his former Barca boss Pep Guardiola, who has enjoyed unprecedented success during his time at Manchester City.
